HelloSoft Demonstrates VoIP on Microsoft Windows CE for Handhelds at Spring 2002 VON in Seattle, WA
Enabling Windows CE-based handheld devices with Voice over Packet technology
San Jose, CALIF. – April 09, 2002 – HelloSoft, Inc., a leading communication software company, today announced the successful demonstration of HelloVoiceTM Voice over Packet software on the Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 real-time operating system (RTOS). This demonstration was conducted on a Compaq iPaq PocketPC, which uses Windows CE 3.0 as the underlying operating system. This enables mobile and handheld device manufacturers and application integrators who want to incorporate voice communication capabilities in their products to extend the functionality of these devices for real-time voice communication over IP networks. This also provides great value to the end users who will use their future and existing handheld organizers as web-phones. The demonstration will be shown at the Microsoft partner pavilion (no. 900, 902) at the Spring 2002 Voice on the Net (VON) conference in Seattle, Washington this week.
HelloVoice on the Windows CE 3.0 operating system provides the unique capability of running all the DSP software on popular RISC CPUs (e.g. StrongARM, MIPS, ARM, ARC), which are all supported by Windows CE 3.0. The set-up at Spring 2002 VON demonstrates HelloSoft’s implementation of the G.729A/B vocoder on a StrongARM processor, the heart of the iPaq. This iPaq device is fitted with a standard 802.11b modem and enables voice communications with another similarly fitted iPaq. The iPaq also communicates with a Pentium-based laptop running HelloSoft’s G.729A/B vocoder running on Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 2000 or Windows NT operating system.
“HelloSoft has established a unique combination of relationships with both Microsoft (for VoIP over Windows CE 3.0) and with Intel (for VoIP on StrongARM). With the help of an excellent team of implementation engineers, HelloSoft has implemented VoIP over Windows CE 3.0 on StrongARM,” said Ashok Setty, vice president of Marketing and Business Development at HelloSoft. “This is a compelling demonstration of HelloSoft’s capabilities to add ‘soft voice’ on the existing vast array of handhelds without adding separate DSP hardware.”
“With the proliferation of IP telephony, companies are looking for ways to quickly integrate this functionality into their Windows Powered smart devices,” said Scott Horn, director of the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corp. “The rich application support of Windows CE 3.0 allows OEMs to easily expand the capabilities of their Windows Powered smart devices by including innovative applications, such as HelloSoft’s HelloVoice.”
Targeted applications, available for licensing, include the following:
ITU-T compatible G.7xx vocoders, G.165/G.168/G.168 2000 Echo Canceller, Signal Classification, Caller ID, G.167 Acoustic Echo Canceller, DTMF, VAD/CNG, Jitter Buffer, CPT, SIP, RTP, RTCP, Directory (Phone Book). Details on the features and licensing information can be obtained from HelloSoft.
