LSI Logic releases low-cost DSP solution for emerging voice over network applications

New ZSP standard product delivers 600 MIPS at peak performance with a low power consumption per channel and backwards compatibility for ease of use

MILPITAS, Calif., March 6, 2001 - LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI), today announced the introduction of the LSI403Z to its growing family of ZSP digital signal processor standard products. Based on LSI Logic's ZSP400™ core, the LSI403Z extends LSI Logic's standard product portfolio and is ideal for use in Small Office Home Office (SOHO) and residential gateway applications. These applications deploy and manage high-speed Internet access, web-based call centers, and other applications that require technology support for high quality voice and data service.

As system requirements become increasingly complex, the LSI403Z provides the ideal combination of performance, high code density and ease of programming which enables designers of digital subscriber line (DSL) and broadband wireless systems to build integrated access devices providing up to 12 voice channels. As a low-cost advantage, the LSI403Z operates at just pennies per million instructions per second (MIPS) and is one of the most cost-effective solutions under ten dollars on the market today.

"LSI Logic's latest addition to the ZSP standard product portfolio demonstrates our continued commitment to the communications market and the rapidly growing voice-over network market," said Giuseppe Staffaroni, executive vice president and general manager of LSI Logic's Broadband Division. "This product complements our previously announced LSI402ZX offering and provides the market with an alternative source for full range DSP solutions that are software compatible."

Features, Benefits and Availability

The LSI403Z is housed in a 208-pin PQFP package and operates at 150 MHz for a maximum throughput of 600 million instructions per second (MIPS). This is achieved via a four way superscalar engine with four execution units; two multiply accumulate units (MACs) and two arithmetic logic units (ALUs). This functionality allows the LSI403Z to execute two multiply-accumulate operations in a single clock cycle deliver high-performance while consuming only 1m W/MIPS (typical) of power. In addition, single cycle add-compare-select, bit-manipulation and 32-bit arithmetic and logic operations are supported for optimal performance. The LSI403Z is available now and priced at $8.86 in volume shipments of 50K.
